Introducing Project Contemporalis
CONTEMPORARY ART AT AUCTION.
An open letter to artists, galleries, dealers, curators and art lovers around the world
Ritchies is both pleased and proud to announce the creation of a new division to focus entirely on contemporary art and artists: Project Contemporalis.
But before we introduce the new division, we would like to address the issue of Artist Resale Rights.
Artist Resale Rights in Canada
Beginning with Project Contemporalis’ inaugural auction this month, Ritchies will be voluntarily issuing resale commission to Canadian artists. Ritchies will be the first major auction house in Canada to begin paying resale commission to artists, a practise that is already law in the UK, Europe, Australia and many other countries and regions around the world. The resale commission will be derived from Ritchies’ own in-house commissions and will affect neither buyer nor seller.
While Parliament continues to drag its feet instituting a comparable law in Canada, Ritchies refuses to let artists continue to be exploited. Artists often live in poverty while their work fetches many times over what it was originally sold for and receive absolutely nothing for it. Canada must do more to protect its artists — granting artists resale rights is the first step on a long road.
We call on all Canadian art resellers, beginning with auction houses, to institute their own resale right programs. Auction houses have been profiting from the works of great Canadian artists without giving anything back for far too long. Show your respect and appreciation of artists not with talk, but with real and tangible support.
Introducing Project Contemporalis
This new division within Ritchies has been created to give back to contemporary artists. Auctions are a core part of the division’s business, but Project Contemporalis is much more:
- Our Queen West gallery is available for artists’ exhibitions, free of charge, effective immediately. Exhibiting with Project Contemporalis is an exciting and effective new avenue for artists to garner exposure. Artists are welcome to sell their works either by special auction or private sale, fully administered by Project Contemporalis. Artists enjoy immediate exposure to our carefully curated clientele while avoiding restrictive contracts with galleries and dealers.
- The creation of Project Contemporalis Artists Foundation, a non-profit arms-length division to help discover, support and market local artists
- A section of our twice-yearly live auctions will be dedicated to “undiscovered” artists — artists we feel are worth looking at and collecting, but who haven’t had significant exposure
Project Contemporalis is led by artist and auction veteran Gordon Gothreau.
Being artists ourselves and personal friends with local contemporary artists, we know the demands of being a working artist. We have built Project Contemporalis to be a beacon of hope for artists. Our primary goal is to protect and advance art within Canada and to create a new avenue for artists to advance their careers.
Seeking Consignments / Seeking Artists
We are currently looking for art to supplement our May 29 auction of contemporary art.
Not only does consigning with Ritchies mean exceptional customer service and spectacular results, but you will be actively helping artists! Ritchies is committed to paying artists a portion of our profit, which affect neither buyer nor seller.
While “contemporary art” at auction typically means anything produced after world war 2, Project Contemporalis aims to focus on true contemporaries – art being created now; current and real. While we will offer the standard post-war contemporary art auction fare, we are additionally seeking both current and new Canadian and American artists.
Do you have art produced in the past 20 years? Are you a professional artist yourself? Contact us today and find out what Ritchies can do for you.
